Joe Murphy
Producer/Mixing & Mastering Engineer
I am a versatile and talented musician, with an established classical training in clarinet, piano and drums. I hold Associated Board Grade 8 in clarinet and Trinity Grade 8 (distinction) in drums. I also play guitar and bass to an extremely high standard. Over the years I have played in a variety of genres of bands from soul, to indie to heavy metal – my musical tastes are very wide ranging.
I first became interested in, and set up, a home recording studio at the age of just 14. This developed significantly and I first established JPMMusic, the foundations of our current business, at the age of 17. I initially ran this successful small studio from my home premises and over time built up a substantial and extensive semi professional base of recording equipment, including over 20 high end mic pres (Focusrite, Tube-Tech, TL-Audio), a Studer tape machine, a wide range of outboard gear and an extensive microphone list. As a result, JPMMusic is extremely well resourced for all types of music recording and production, especially with the addition of Chris’s far-reaching gear list.
Currently I am a final year student at LIPA (the Paul McCartney University in Liverpool) studying Sound Technology. This course has enabled me to develop extremely high professional standards of music production and establish a wide range of contacts with individuals in the music industry. I am predicted to graduate with a First Class Honours degree and have an excellent knowledge and understanding of every aspect of the process of creating a commercial track from conception to production. I am a perfectionist in all that I do and aim to draw out the highest standards of musicality from your raw talent.
Recent notable achievements include a track in the UK Top 40 Rock Charts (at number 38) with artists from 90’s rock legends Gun, Thunder & Little Angels. I also work extensively with the Northern Song Collective as their head engineer, and with OneBit Productions, a Liverpool based record label, mixing and mastering most of their releases. Clients include Jack D Williams – and Liverpool One Shopping Centre. I have live sound and rigging experience, including setting up the sound system for large commercial touring shows, most recently for Elton John.
A small selection of acts I have worked with include:
Bag Of Hounds, Careful Jepson, Charli Taft, Daniel Ross & The Sinking Ships, Dog Is Dead, Fabienne Holloway, Gun, Hot Light Fiesta, Jackie D Williams, JazzHands, Kelly Paige, Little Angels, Manukah, Maverick Sabre, Moon Whiskey, Northern Song Collective, OneBit Productions, Paraffin Oil Shop, Thunder, Wonderlust
And many, many more…
Chris Hewitt
Record Producer/Sound Engineer
Growing up in a creative family has had a profound effect on myself as a person and a professional. My father; an ex BBC studio manager has long been my mentor and has enthusiastically guided me through life to the stage I am currently at. My mother, with her experience of operatic singing and acting has also been a driving force in my passion and love for music. As a young boy I took up playing violin at the age of 5, this classical training has lead me to lead orchestras at premier venues such as Symphony Hall in Birmingham.
I have also been working as a professional session drummer for a number of years, working on some brilliant projects with incredible musicians some of which I have gone on tour around the world with. The application of my musical knowledge combined with my expertise in audio production has lead me to great success with up and coming bands who have had major label interest and radio play. I can’t remember what life was like before I was interested in sound and music. something unusual for a sound engineer is that I find it hard at present to say whether I’m more of a live or a studio engineer as I spend all day every day doing both to a very high standard.
In the studio I often take a quite artistic role even when working as just an engineer, I like to listen to the emotions and the finer qualities of the music to work out what I want a bands record to sound like, rather than simply referencing other peoples CD’s. “Vibe” is the biggest word in the studio for me as everything is about creating a great atmosphere for the talent to create something wonderful in. I’m also a very experienced live sound engineer, having worked as a system tech, front of house and monitor engineer on a lot of festivals and tours.
As a musician I specialize in studio session drums, mainly in Funk/Soul and Pop based genres.
Things that inspire me include, deep and emotive lyrics, passionate and creative people, old school equipment, grooves.
